Celebrating National Volunteer Week

The BC Games is a very large event, one of the largest of its kind in North America.  As many as 3,000 volunteers come together for each Games to ensure participants have an unforgettable experience.

A Board of Directors is established in each community by the Mayor and other members of a nominating committee.  The Directors are community leaders in their own right and bring their time, energy, and commitment to make the Games a success, leading over 75 committee chairs who manage all aspects of the planning and staging of the Games.

Furthermore, Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs) provide a number of volunteers, from coaches and officials to the Provincial Advisor, Sport Chair, and Zone Representatives. They make sure athletes can attend the Games and benefit from quality coaching, officiating, and leadership.

The BC Games Society provides resources to fulfill its philosophy of helping others lead.  This includes written and online materials, timelines that ensure everyone reaches milestones at the same time, and staff support. Host community volunteers are encouraged to add their own uniqueness from their community to their Games, making each Games special and amazing for all involved.

Volunteers are essential to the success of the Team BC program at the Canada Games.

Team BC Mission Staff are volunteers that are selected from experts in the sport, recreation, health services, and communications sectors to provide support to the Provincial Sport Organizations, athletes, coaches, and managers leading up to and during the Canada Games. Leading the team are the Chef de Mission and Assistant Chef de Mission, two volunteer positions with major responsibilities.

Mission Staff provide support in the areas of operations, special events planning, sport management, and communications and work to minimize distractions to ensures that athletes, coaches, and managers can optimize their performances and enhance their overall experience at the Games. Through their involvement with Team BC and the Canada Games, Mission Staff develop leadership skills while growing their professional networks and fostering friendships.

Many of the sport staff who attend the Games also volunteer their time in order to ensure that athletes have a once-in-a-lifetime experience and the best chance at reaching their goals.

The Board of Directors of the BC Games Society is made up of volunteers from around the Province who bring unique backgrounds in sport and essential expertise to help govern the Society.

The Board is community-based and geographically representative of the province.  A maximum of fifteen members are appointed by Ministerial Order.  The Board includes a position for a representative from the Sport Branch of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport.

The Board of Directors of the BC Games Society:

• Is committed to diversity in the administration, policies, programs, and activities of the Society.
• Reviews, on an annual basis, overall BC Games Society budgets, policies, and financial and operating reports.
• Reviews and approves all BC Games Society contracts, including corporate partner contracts, financial agreements between the Provincial Government and host communities.
• Determines the Core Sport Criteria that is used to qualify sports for each BC Winter and BC Summer Games.
• Reviews the bid applications procedure, reviews incoming bid applications, and in cooperation with the President and CEO, recommends to the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport a final site selection.
